Photo: John Wabshca (Wabasauaw) Name on front of card says, "Old John Wabasquaw" Should be [Old John Wabshca.] Address cut off. "Mr. George" probably was George Fisher, "Dear Cousin", to the sender, Mr. E. [Paul?] Possibly John White of Kewadin (idetified by Vicki Wilson researcher of Native American Genealogy). From Vicki: John was the son of Waw-be-saw, who received land in Milton township, Antrim county, section 12 in 1872. In 1880 John is age 25, living with his father, brother Joseph and Joseph's family. Brother Peter is the entry after, P.M. is the entry before. In 1900 John is age 47, a cordwood cutter, living in Clearwater township, Kalkaska county in this brother Peter's family. Their father, called Aaron on the census is age 99. In the 1908 Durant Roll Field Notes, the father, Waw-be-saw, is deceased, John Wab skah is 61 and resides in Elk Rapids. Other children of Waw-be-saw are Peter, Joseph, and Susie (who married O-ge-daw-quet.). In 1920 John is age 80, living alone in Milton township, Antrim county. Brother Peter is next door. John and Peter Wa-be-squah are both mentioned in the Traverse City Record Eagle of 27 Jun 1927. John died in Milton township on 11 Feb 1928. Age is given as 86 and Peter is the informant. He is buried in Kewadin - mostly in the Indian Mission Cemetery. He does not have a marker. John's brother Joseph and their nephew George (son of Susie) are the men who murdered Peter Kewadin and injured Peter Mark in October of 1882. |
