Summary on back of book: "Rebecca Richmond's Omena summer diaries transports us to the era of development of summer communities and colonies in the beginning of the 20th century. She writes about daily activities, visits from friends and relatives, local events, observations on nature, and other interesting glimpses into past times. Ms. Richmond became familiar with Omena from her uncle, Abel T. Page, who with Frank Graves, promoted Omena as an ideal resort community. In 1897, Ms. Richmond built a cottage at Omena and named it "Bonnie Banks." In 1908 she purchases the adjacent cottage, "Camp Lookout," and managed its rental. She traveled back and forth from Grand Rapids to Omena several times durin the warm months, often accompanied by friends. Rebecca richmond was born in 1840 to a prominent family in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was a life-long resident of that city. She became well known for her many charitable acts and generous gifts to local cultural organizations. She is best known in Grand Rapids for her donation of land for Richmond Park, which was given in honor of her father, William Almay Richmond." |
